- Alayne Mariette Willard, 81, of Peoria, Arizona, formerly of Machias, Maine, passed away on December 29th, 2016, after a prolonged illness.
Alayne was born in Rangeley, Maine, on April 17th, 1935, the daughter of Nester A. and Hazel M. Carignan. She graduated as Valedictorian from Wilton Academy High School in 1953 and then attended Husson College before becoming a secretary at Farmington State College which later became part of the larger University of Maine system. In the late 60's Alayne, with her family in tow, moved to Ohio where she worked for the University of Akron as an administrative assistant during which times the campus uprisings against the Vietnam War were occurring at this institution as well as the more publicized Kent State College.
Longing to return to her beloved State of Maine Alayne, and family, relocated to Machias, Maine, in 1970. She took a position with the University of Maine at Machias and eventually became the executive secretary to the VP of Academic Affairs and then later to the President of UMM. During her 28 years at UMM Alayne was a voice for the welfare of the university's non-academic employees. She rose to the position of chairman of the classified employees for the entire university system elevating their concerns to the highest levels of the university system. During this time period Alayne was also an advocate for the continued growth and development of the Machias campus as well as the other small campuses throughout the university system when proposed budget cuts were being discussed at the state level.
While Alayne was busy working "up on the Hill" at UMM she was also active in local affairs. In 1980 she become the first woman "selectmen" in Machias's history. She won multiple elections and served the Town of Machias with distinction for close to a decade. Around this time period Alayne was a member of a women's pinochle club as well as a longtime member of the Machias Center Street Congregational Church then later at the Windham Hill United Church of Christ.
Before and after her retirement from UMM one of Alayne's favorite pastimes was spending time up at Bog Lake with her family and then later with the grandchildren on their visits to the "Down East" area. Christmas was Alayne's favorite holiday and she would spare no expensive making sure that her children and grandchildren enjoyed the holiday to the fullest.
Alayne, Mom, "Mimi" (as known by her grandchildren) was predeceased by husband Keith B. Willard and is survived by her children Catherine (Cathy) Healy, Thomas (Tom) Willard and wife Lauren of Brockton, MA, Ramona (Mona) Sutherland and husband Bruce of Gorham, ME, Kimberly (Kim) Williams and husband David of Charlotte, TN, Elizabeth (Betsy) Hayward and husband Peter of Peoria, AZ, and 13 grandchildren Anna and Kate Healy, Meghan Doran, Amanda Munden, and Andrew Willard, Billy, Amy, and Nicole Sutherland, T.J. Zwingle, Heather Stockton, and Maranda Williams, Abby and Emma Hayward, and 7 great grandchildren and more on the way.
A grave side memorial service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery, Farmington, ME, on June 3rd 2017, at 1 p.m. and a gathering with refreshments will follow at a location yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers we are suggesting that a donation to the Alzheimer's Foundation be made in memory of Alayne Willard.
