Ainsley's Story

BATH - Ainsley Pierson McPhee, 79, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015.

He was born in Weston, Maine on March 6, 1936, the son of Charles R. and Alma G. (Whitney) McPhee.

He attended schools in Weston and Danforth. He graduated from Danforth High School in 1953 where he played basketball and baseball. Following high school he worked with his father in the woods. On November 29, 1958 he married Betsy Douglas of Bath, they moved to Bangor where he worked at Grants Dairy. In 1959 they moved to Bath where he began work at Bath Iron Works, while at the shipyard he was a shop steward in the pipe shop for 30 years. He also was the Union President and the first president of the IAM. He retired from BIW in 2001.

He was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Bath where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

He was on the board of directors at the Bath YMCA, and President of the Bath Softball League.

For many years he coached Bath Little League Baseball, midget league basketball, YMCA 5th and 6th grade basketball, Bath Junior High Intramurals, AAU Basketball, American Legion Baseball, AAU Soccer and Hampden Newburg Little League where his grandson Eric played, Mt. Ararat freshman girls basketball.

He played softball for the First Baptist Church of Bath, the Bath Merchants, Smith Tobey and Cahill's Tire teams and the Columbia Street Baptist Church of Bangor, baseball for the Dodgers over 40 league in Bath when he was 75.

He also enjoyed bowling with the Will Ryder bowling team and played in the mini golf tournament senior division at the Dolphin Mini Golf Course in Boothbay.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy of 56 years, a son, Todd McPhee of Woolwich and his special friend Shelly Goodkowsky and Evan of Wiscasset, a daughter Tracey Smith and her husband David of Hampden, a grandson, Eric Smith of Hampden, a sister Freda Grant of Dedham and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, an infant son, Trent, two brothers, Percy McPhee and Dean McPhee and two nephews.

A visiting hour will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A memorial service will follow at 11 AM at the funeral home with Pastor McPhedran officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Woolwich Grange, Mountain Road, Woolwich. A scattering of ashes will be at PeekaBoo Mountain in Weston, Maine at a later date.
