William (Bill)'s Story
LaBelle, Florida and Milbridge
- William (Bill) R. Girvan, 78, of LaBelle, Florida and Milbridge, Maine passed away on December 29th, 2017 with his wife Lois (Pierce) Girvan at his side. He was born December 3, 1939, son of Robert Edward and Dorothy (Strickland) Girvan in Bangor, Maine.
He graduated from Bangor High School in 1958 and the University of Maine in 1970. His occupations included welding, teaching and building houses.
In 1959 Bill helped his father build Kenduskeag Valley Golf Course. He became an avid golfer, enjoying playing as well as watching the game.
Bill enjoyed writing prose and poetry, and in 1982 published his book, IN BEYOND KATAHDIN, in which he recounted many of his early hikes into Baxter State Park, a place that was very dear to his heart.
Having an insatiable curiosity and desire to learn new things, he was well-versed in many areas and had an impressive memory.
In his early years he enjoyed hunting and trapping. However, later in his life he found it more fulfilling to shoot with his camera, thus capturing beautiful nature and wildlife photos and videos. He loved crossword puzzles, trivia and sharing memories, puns and jokes with friends and family.
Bill was preceded in death by parents Robert & Dorothy Girvan, siblings, Janet Girvan Greene and Robert (Bobby) Girvan; brothers-in-law Merton Pierce and Harold Call. He is survived by: sisters Margaret Berry and husband Edwin, Mary Call, Barbara Rozelle and husband Peter; sisters-in-law Karen Girvan & Marion Lugdon and husband Ed; brothers-in-law Willis Pierce and wife Kathy, and Richard Greene; many nieces, nephews, cousins and several very dear friends.
Among his many blessings Bill included: Lois's children, Stephanie and Larry Collins, and Michael & Vicki Doucette; grandchildren Danielle and James Gray, Kristie Collins (our angel), Joshua & Brittney Collins, and James Michael Doucette; and great grandchildren, Sophia and Lilly Gray and Carter Collins. A celebration of Bill's life will be held this summer in Maine with family and friends.
