Vito's Story

Text size

BANGOR - Vito Rocco "Rocky" Fratello passed from this life into the next on January 13, 2016 at his home. He was born February 15, 1925, to Italian immigrants Alessandro and Anna Fratello - the youngest of their 5 children and the first in the family to be born in the USA.

He was the devoted husband of Beatrice "Bea" Marie Fratello for 65 years until her passing on October 12, 2012. He was the adopted father to his wife's daughter Linda McManus, who is deceased, and father to their son Victor Fratello of Etna, who survives him.

Rocky, affectionately known as "Papa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a hard working man. He served in the Army Air Corps as a left-flank gunner in WWII and retired from the United States Air Force at the rank of Command Master Sargent with 23 years and 6 months of combined service. He also retired from the U.S. Postal Service with over 23 years when his night shift interfered with his night bowling!

He bowled for many years at Family Fun bowling center and even continued to bowl while on hospice with cancer at age 90. Rocky enjoyed playing Liverpool Rummy with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and had a great sense of humor.

He is fondly remembered and greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews, especially Patricia "Patty" Mollino (Long Island, NY); granddaughter Katie Fratello (Portland); grandson Chris Fratello and great grandsons Kaleb (14) and Alex (9) (Anchorage, AK); grandson and granddaughter-in-law Dave and Abby Fratello and 18-month old great-granddaughter Gabriella "Bella" Grace who lived with him and cared for him in his last days. He was, also, eagerly anticipating the birth of another great-grandchild due in March to Dave and Abby.

We love and miss you, Papa. Your life was a precious gift. Your strength was and is an inspiration. May your soul rest now in the arms of the One who is Life and the Rock of our salvation.

A special thank you to the kind and loving staff at the Bangor Denny's and Olive Garden for many years of treating Rocky like a celebrity and always having his soup ready when he came in.
