Terry's Story

PALMYRA - Terry Garcelon Steele passed peacefully at her home in Palmyra, Maine, on November 23, 2015.

She was born in Troy, Maine, to George B. and Helen (Weymouth) Garcelon on December 23, 1926. She was the loving wife of Ronald J. Steele and devoted mother to the late Schuyler G. Steele, Esq.

Terry attended school in Troy and graduated from Maine Central Institute as class Valedictorian in 1944. She then went to the University of Maine, where she majored in journalism and graduated in 1948 as a member of the Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honor society.

Immediately after graduation, Terry worked for the Kennebec Journal in Augusta as a reporter. She and Ronald were married August 11, 1951. Early in their marriage they lived in Mississippi and in Connecticut, where their son was born on June 16, 1958. In 1959, the family moved to their present home.

For several years Terry was a homemaker with varied interests. One of these interests gained her fame locally-her plants and flowers, especially her dahlias and gladiolus's, which she sold in the summer. Hardly a car passed the house without its passengers stopping to admire the gardens or to purchase a bouquet.

In the early seventies Terry earned a Master's Degree in Library Science from UMO. She worked as librarian at BMHI, Nokomis Regional High School and Dexter Regional High School from which she retired in 1989. At Dexter she advised a very popular Library Club of nearly one hundred students. She also loved writing stories.

For her outstanding service as a school librarian, she was invited to join Omicron Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators and was a member at the time of her death.

Terry was predeceased by her parents; her son; and seven siblings.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald; daughter-in-law, Joan Payne Steele; several nieces and nephews; and a very close friend of many years, Sarah G. Chipman.

Ron would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to her loving and compassionate caregivers; Tammy DeLong, Betty Brooks, Bonnie Godfrey, Keith Woodard and Cindy Harvey Woodard.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, November 30, 2015, at the Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene, 200 Central Street, Pittsfield, with the Pastor Bob Herring officiating. A committal service will immediately follow at the Sawyers Cemetery, Route 7, in Plymouth.
