Sylvester's Story

HERMON - Sylvester "Red" Hanegan, 75, passed away March 8, 2016, after a long, hard battle with lung cancer. He was born in Bassfield, Miss., May 28, 1940, to Anastasia and Sylvester Hanegan.

After graduation he worked at several jobs until joining the Air Force. he was stationed in Charleston, where he met his wife, Betty. They lived in Mass. for ten years, finally moving to Maine to raise their three sons. He served in the Air Force and Air National Guard for many years. He was employed at Lincoln Pulp and Pater until he retired.

Red was predeceased by his mother and father; four brothers, Tim, Earl, Coleman and Martin; and one sister, Theresa. Red is survived by two sisters, Angie and Sister Cathy Hanegan; and one brother, Alfred. He is also survived by his wife and best friend, Betty; three sons, Phillip and Heather, Paul and Mitchell, and Jason and Kristin; five grandchildren, Ashley, Rachel, Katie and Meghan; and one grandson, Cooper. Red adored his family and will be greatly missed.

At his request, there will be no services. There will be a funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church in Bangor.
