Stanley's Story

EAST MILLINOCKET - Tom Glidden, 70, passed suddenly on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at a Portland hospital. He was born May 17, 1945 in Island Falls, the son of Stanley T. "Toby" and June M. (Dwyer) Glidden.

Tom grew up in Island Falls, and spent much time with his grandparents in Oakfield. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963-67. He was proud of his service, and was a faithful and regular attendee of the Veteran's Day Parade in Bangor, and was especially pleased to take his grandchildren, who proudly wore their Air Force hats to honor him. Tom worked at the Great Northern Paper Company as an Environmental Engineer for over 30 years. His passion was golfing, and later went on to work at the Hillcrest Golf Club in Millinocket as manager for 10 years. He travelled the state with his friend George and son in law Gabe, trying out different courses. After retiring, his daily routine consisted of bringing Kim to school, getting a coffee at Maryanne's, taking a "tour of Medway," "cleaning up the house," and watching TV until Kim called to say she "was ready" to be picked up. Their weekends were spent on Reny's trips, visits to grandchildren, and travelling roads that looked "interesting." Tom was involved with the Northern Knights Drum and Bugle Corps for many years, and travelled many miles from Canada to Florida performing. Each year, he looked forward to going to hunting camp with his uncles Joe and Leon, and teaching his sons about life in the woods when they were growing up. He had a close group of friends at the Hamlet Pub, and worked with the Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce for many years. Tom was always ready and willing to go where he was invited, but he was especially passionate about his children and grandchildren, and attending any event in which they were involved. Tom was a familiar and quiet presence wherever he went. He will be lovingly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

In addition to his mother, June Glidden of Portland, Tom is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kim A. (Smith) Glidden of East Millinocket; four children, Andrew Glidden and his wife Kerrie, Jon Glidden and Nicole Morrison, Jennifer Civiello and her husband Gabe, and Amy Witham and her husband Dennis; eleven grandchildren, Mikayla, Becka, Tim, Maria, Madeline, Noah, James, Ben, Audrey, Trey, and Lily; two brothers, Russell Glidden and Perry Glidden; three sisters, Candy Kidney, Beth Manzo, and Jill Boynton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will also be missed by Sandra Lyons, mother of his sons. Tom was predeceased by his father and a sister, Dawn Laplante.

Friends are invited to visit with the family 12 - 2 P.M. Saturday, March 12 at the Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, where funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. with the Rev. Deacon Dan Watson officiating. Spring interment, with military honors, will be at the East Millnocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Tom may be sent to House in the Woods, 217 Skunk Hill Road, Lee, ME 04455. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
