CUTLER - Sherman E. McCaslin, 80, passed away peacefully at a Bangor hospital on Nov. 18, 2015, at 3pm in the afternoon. He was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Lubec, the son of the late Otis P. and Eva (Hall) McCaslin.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. While stationed there he met his wife of 57 years, Waltrud "Wallie". He worked as an air traffic controller for many years and later worked for NASA in Greenbelt, MD until his retirement in 1990. He and Wallie soon after moved back to Maine to be closer to family.
Sherman was an avid outdoors man, hunter, and fisherman. He enjoyed being on the trails with his ATV buddies. He was a member and Past Master of Union Lodge in Nantucket, MA and member of Warren Lodge #2 of East Machias, and Washington Lodge #37 in Lubec. He was also a former member of Parkinson-Vose Post #3315 V.F.W. in Lubec.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Waltrud "Wallie" Schwarz; a daughter, Karen and her husband, John; a son, Michael and his wife, Marie; grandsons, Christopher, Matthew, John, Zachary, and Louis; his only granddaughter, Annie Mae Taylor; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom he loved dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by 6 brothers, Otis, George, Francis, Charles, Elwyn, and Johnny; three sisters, Ellen, Stella, and Mary. He was the last of his generation to pass.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at the West Lubec Methodist Church with Pastor John and Patrice Goodwin officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services Machias and Lubec.
