Following his graduation from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, OH, Sherman enrolled at Yale University to study architecture. His studies at Yale were interrupted by WWII, during which he flew supply missions for weather stations in Greenland, as a member of the Army Air Corps. Sherman first worked for the US Department of the Interior as a water resources analyst at The Bonneville Power Administration in Oregon before transitioning into City Planning positions in Minneapolis, MN, and New Haven, CT.
After moving to Orono in 1966, Sherman worked at the University of Maine, first as a Community Development Specialist with the Cooperative Extension Services and, later, with the Land and Water Resources Center.
Among Sherman's most notable contributions to the Orono community were the founding of the Housing Foundation and development of Talmar Woods, along with his efforts to preserve the Birch Street School building. He was also an avid flyer and aerial photographer.
Sherman is predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Sarah Smith Hasbrouck. He is survived by his son, Joel Hasbrouck, daughter-in-law, Lisa Summers, and two grandchildren, Siena and Ariane, of Ridgewood, NJ; his son, Brian Hasbrouck, of Arlington, MA; and his son, Dwight "Dewey" Hasbrouck, daughter-in-law, Emily and two grandchildren, Leo and Stuart, of Orono. He is also survived by two brothers, Doug Hasbrouck and Steve Hasbrouck, both of Hudson, OH, and his first wife, Sally Levinson, of Wallingford, CT.
A memorial service will be held at 3 o'clock on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono. Memorial donations may be made to the Church of Universal Fellowship (82 Main Street, Orono, ME 04473) or a charity of the donor's choosing.
