- Sarah Anne Wendel, 69, died Dec 21, 2016, at her residence as a result of heart failure.She was born Sarah Anne Balano in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, on May 5, 1947.
Sarah received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from University of Maine, Orono, in 1972; and Master of Education from University of Maine Orono in 1978. Sarah was a life-long student of learning and had received certificates in GIS from University of North Dakota, along with pursuing doctoral studies. She had spent more than 40 years teaching at various high schools in Maine, Maryland and Virginia. She most recently, before retiring, was in the science department at Messalonskee High School and was the co-advisor for the Junior Class of 2018.
She has five siblings, Michael Jane White of Spanaway, WA, Jim Balano of St. George/Monhegan, ME, Richard Balano of Kittery, Carrie Belano Henningham of Ware, MA, and John Balano of Chesapeake Beach, MD. She is also missed by her mother-in-law, Theresa Wende; sisters-in-law, Patricia Pincus and Jacqueline Cestero; and stepson and wife along with grandson, Thearin Wendel, Sandra Novotny and Alex Wendel. She has several nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Peter, Samantha, Molly, Penny and Ali, all of which were very special to her.
