Ruth's Story

NORRIDGEWOCK - Ruth Ann Sawyer died unexpectedly at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in the early hours of Thursday, March 3, 2016. She was born in Skowhegan, Maine on February 23, 1929, the daughter of Royce C. Tuscan and Wyona (Simpson) Tuscan.

She attended Skowhegan area schools and graduated from Skowhegan High School and Bloomfield Academy in 1946. Her plans for a career as a lab tech were high-jacked by a handsome Marine, Linwood L. Sawyer, who had recently returned from the Pacific Theater. They were married on March 30, 1947. They started their family on Madison Avenue in Skowhegan and moved to Norridgewock in 1965.

Ruth held a series of jobs including telephone operator for New England Telephone, production floor and office work at Norwock Shoe in Skowhegan and Norridgewock, and school secretary in SAD#54 at the former Norridgewock Central Grade School and Margaret Chase Smith School in Skowhegan. After her retirement in 1991, she continued to substitute in local school offices for several years. She was a current member of the Redington-Fairview General Hospital Auxiliary and the "Old Lady" luncheon group.

Ruth especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed watching movies, playing cards, going to the casino with friends, and going out to eat. She was the super sitter for grand dog, Remy.

Ruth was predeceased by Linwood, her husband of 59 years, in 2006. She leaves behind daughter, Diane Drew and husband, Tim, of Norridgewock; sons, Bruce Sawyer and wife Lynne of Ellsworth, and Tobey Sawyer and partner Lisa Shorey of Norridgewock; four grandchildren, Todd Sawyer and wife, Angela, of Ellsworth, Katie Sawyer of Waterville, Dylan Drew of Winslow, Kelsey Drew and partner, Kyle Hampson, of Farmington; and 2 and a half great grandchildren, Paige and Natalie Sawyer of Ellsworth, and Baby Girl Mara Hampson due in July 2016. She also leaves behind sister, Joyce Lambert of Norridgewock; brother, Robert Tuscan and wife, Shirley, of Manheim, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no funeral services. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, Maine.
