ST. ALBANS - Ruth E. Downs, 98, passed away September 4, 2015. She had been at Hibbard's Nursing Home in Dover-Foxcroft where the excellent and caring staff provided for her needs during a period of decline.

She was born June 6, 1917 in Parkman, one of 6 children to Elmer and Lela (Allen) Clement. She lived in St. Albans for 71 years: 64 years (1949 -2013) at her home on the Dexter Road.

She married Donald Knowles in 1937 and they lived in Corinna where he worked on the Emerson Farms until they moved to St. Albans to work on the Ralph Hanson farm. She was a step mother to his 3 sons, Robert of Newport, now deceased; Lowell of St. Albans, now deceased; and Francis of Burlington, VT, now deceased. Donald and Ruth had 3 children, Elton of St. Augustine, FL and Oquossoc, ME; Sharon, Orlando, FL-now deceased; and Donald of Bangor.

After Donald Knowles died in 1974, she was later married to Daniel Downs until his death. Afterward she maintained her home independently until 2013 when, at the age of 96, she needed an assisted facility and moved to the Lizabeth House in Dexter.

Throughout her many years she was a self-reliant person of devout faith. Her family, her health and home, her faith, the Bible, fellowship and worship at the Pleasant Street Christian Church, and the teachings of Pastor Edward Jaworski were central to her life. She will be remembered for these values as well as her lively wit and sense of humor.

Ruth is survived by two sons; sixteen grandchildren (four deceased); twenty-two great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held 1 P. M. Friday, September 18th at the Village Cemetery, Stetson Road, Corinna, with Pastors Edward Jaworski and David Chenowith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pleasant Street Christian Church, 29 St. Albans Road, Corinna, ME 04928. Following the services, please join the family for fellowship at the Pleasant Street Christian Church. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, Corinna.
