Russell's Story

THOMASTON - Russell Arthur Penney, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 9, 2016. He was born October 20, 1926 in Dorchester, Mass., son of Margaret E. (Delorey) and Arthur J. Penney.

As a child Russell grew up in Lancaster, New Hampshire and in Warren, Maine where he attended local schools. He worked at BIW for 2 years to help provide for the family before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving at Pearl Harbor. He was honorably discharged on July 3, 1946 and moved back to Warren where he worked for his father, a building contractor, and also dug clams. He worked as a carpenter, painter, and later as a building contractor and partner in H & P Builders, Inc., of Thomaston.

Russell was known to all as a kind and patient man who always made time for family and friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had been a past member of the Knox Fish and Game Association. One of his favorite past times was yearly hunting trips to northern Maine.

He was the eldest of eight children and is survived by his sisters, Marjorie Martin of Round Pond, Monica Moore and husband Earle of Edgecomb and Dundee, Florida, Irene Vinal and husband Edward of Cushing; one brother, Arthur Penney, Jr. and wife June of Kilgore, TX; many nieces and nephews; two stepsons, Terrance Costa and wife Fran of South Thomaston, David Costa and wife Sandra of Newhall, CA; four grandchildren, Denise Mitchell and husband Peter of Thomaston, Jennifer O'Donoghue, and husband Jamie of Warren, Terrance Costa, Jr and wife Alicia of Warren, David Costa of Los Angeles, CA; two great-granddaughters, Meredith and Morgan Mitchell.

He was predeceased by his wife Priscilla McGraw Penney; sisters, Bertha (Betty) Henderson, Margaret (Peggy) Chadwick and brother, Charles Penney.

He is also survived by his special niece and caregiver, Marilyn Wilson.

At Russell's request there will be no services. Therefore his family wishes to thank his brother-in-law Elwyn Henderson for his unfailing daily visits along with special care from his nephew Frank Henderson, niece Peggy York, neighbor Mike King, and the Hospice home care team.
