Robert Alan Stanley

December 18, 1949 - August 05, 2018

Milbridge Robert Alan Stanley passed away peacefully at EMMC in Bangor August 5, 2018, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. Known as a humble man with a big heart who was always ready to lend a hand, he will be sadly missed by his coworkers and the community. Bob was born in Ellsworth, Maine, the son of Alvin and Ruth (Birdsall) Stanley. Robert was a member of the first class to graduate from the new Narraguagus High School and from the University of Maine. After graduation he worked with a friend to establish the Worcester-Stanley Wreath Company. They formed County Concrete and eventually he went on to join the Jasper Wyman & Son Blueberry Factory on July 1, 1978. This year was the first year in 40 years that he missed the blueberry season. He began as a truck driver and worked his way up to Director of Engineering and Maintenance for the company. In 2014, he was instrumental in designing and equipping a huge addition to the Wyman's plant in PEI. Bob had been a member of the Milbridge Fire Department for 36 years. Aside from answering fire and rescue calls, one of his favorite events was driving Santa Claus around on the old, antique fire truck delivering candy boxes to area children at Christmas time. The huge lobster cookers for the lobster dinners on Milbridge Days were also of his design. He belonged to the Washington County Fire Fighters Assoc., the ME State Federation of Fire Fighters, and the national Volunteer Fire Council. In recent years, he became more active in the Milbridge Historical Society helping with fund raisers and other projects. In June he helped set up an exhibit showcasing the past garages in Milbridge and assisted in presenting a talk on the history of those garages. Restoring his father's 1931 Model A Ford was another proud accomplishment of his. Every original part was cleaned and restored. He was a member of the Model A Club of Maine and took part in many of their events in and outside the state. Bob also loved the Patriots and enjoyed tailgating with his Boston friends, supplying them with the lobsters.
Bob was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Rachel Ellis; his sons, Ryan and Kyle Stanley; and a stepdaughter, Monica Wohl-Schneider. His grandchildren, Alyssa, Alyson, and Zakary Ellis and Sebastienne Stanley, along with stepgrandchildren, Jenna and Kyler Wilson, were his pride and joy. He was looking forward to a new granddaughter in December. Also surviving are his sister, Linda Sprague and a brother, Richard Stanley. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins will miss his visits, his stories and his humor as well as friends and community from PEI to other parts of New England.
A Celebration of Life will take place around 1p.m. at his house, 75 Wyman Road, Milbridge, on August 18. The Fire Department, Historical Society, and a Wyman representative will share memories. All are welcome to stop by. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Milbridge Fire Department Auxiliary, P.O. Box 173, Milbridge, or the Milbridge Historical Society, P.O. Box 194, Milbridge 04658. A private burial will be held at another time. Arrangements were entrusted to Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge.

Truly, the world was a better place because of Bob, a kind and generous soul. He was very close to the Treadwell sisters, too. I shall not forget that he came to meet my family who put in to Bar Harbor for just one day last year and then took my parents to Acadia and a lobster lunch. He was a dear! I offer my sincerest condolences to the Stanley family. I am very sorry that he has passed.

With great sympathy, your (distant) cousin,
Mariah

Bob was the most steadfast man I have ever met. Every time I popped into his office I received the same beautiful smile and welcome. He taught me about all the moving parts at Wyman’s, he faithfully visited and waited at my home on the coldest nights of December for my boys to see Santa, he claimed to never be bothered when I had yet another question about our new boilers efficiencies and he laughed at my attempt to explain the information he gave me. Bob never let me leave his office without fully understanding. His patience were never ending, his smile infectious, his hugs the best, his heart the biggest and his passing the worst.
