- Robert H. Flenner, age 93, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on August 4, 1923 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to parents, Robert W. and Anna Fasic Flenner. Robert was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School, where he played trumpet in the band. He also played trumpet for the Altoona Symphony while still in high school. Robert attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania for two years, then enlisted in the US Army Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Robert graduated from Georgetown School of Foreign Service in 1949, then attended London School of Economics from 1949-1951.
His career with the State Department spanned from 1952 until 1968 and took him to many places, including Central and South America, as well as Western Africa. Robert received his Master's Degree at Harvard in 1959 and ultimately earned the prestigious title of Fulbright scholar. He began his career with the Maine Maritime Academy in 1968, where he started as Fundraising Officer, then became the PR Officer and ultimately the Chief Administrative Officer. He also taught Spanish and was the faculty advisor for the Yearbook. After retiring in 1985, Robert spent his time between Castine, Maine, and San Antonio, Texas, before permanently residing in San Antonio, Texas, in 1997.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne Walther and second wife, Sylvia G. Flenner; sister, Mary Ann Flenner. Robert is survived by his sons, John W. Flenner and Robert L. Flenner; and sister, Martha F. Shatzer.
