MARSHFIELD - Robert Charles Carter, born April 4,1943 to Vaughn and Christine Carter (Farmer) in Brunswick, Maine, passed away March, 5, 2016 from stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer at his home in Marshfield, Maine.

He was the beloved husband of Joan Dorr Carter, who he married in Lubec of July 3, 1965. They had two children for whom he was so proud - Robert Wayde Carter and his wife Toni of Marshfield, and Kristyne Evelyn Carter Currier and her husband, Jeffrey Currier of Gardner Lake - Marion Township. He was predeceased by his first born daughter, Melissa.

He leaves behind nine grandchildren who truly adored him. They held such a special place in his heart. Gunky was loved so much by them all. His grandchildren are Britany Carter Scull and husband, Bill; Aaron Currier and his wife, Shannon; Alex Currier and his wife, Kirsten; Timothy Carter and his wife, Sarah; Matthew Carter; Ian Currier; Anderson Currier; Libby Carter and McKenna Carter. Additionally, he was blessed with three great-grandchildren who lit up his life - Audrey Currier, Wesley Carter and Emersyn Currier.

Bobby (Gunky) was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a medic/paratrooper. He retired as a Maine State Game Warden and served 15 years on the Board of Directors of Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Company. He was a devoted member of the Machias Valley Baptist Church and his love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was important to him. Bobby had a great business sense. He and Joan bought Helen's Restaurant on Main Street in Machias. Bobby had a vision for the area of the causeway in Machias, which he felt was underutilized. He and Joan moved Helen's there to its present location. They also built and operated the Machias Motor Inn at the same location.

Bobby had a love of old guns, especially Winchesters, which led him to open a gun shop. He enjoyed traveling to guns shows, and he was considered an expert in identifying and valuing Winchesters, receiving inquiries from across the country.

Bobby had a smile for everyone. He never held a grudge. He was forgiving and always saw the best in everyone. He was the best son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend that anyone could ask for.

In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind a brother, Aubrey Carter; a sister, Jetta Matthews and her husband, EIliot; sisters in law Judy Hanscom and Joyce Jamison and husband, Allan. He had a special place in heart for his many nieces and nephews, along with special friends David and Donna Burns, Donnie and Linda Vose, and Marilyn Schoppee.

Funeral services will be held at the Machias Valley Baptist Church in Machias on Tuesday, March 8. A social gathering will commence at noon, with the celebration of life service to follow at 1 o'clock. Burial will be held at 2pm in the Longfellow Cemetery, Machias .
