BELMONT - Richard Thomas Richter, 80, of Belmont, Maine, passed away after a brief illness on November 27, 2015. He was born in Fitchburg, MA, on August 9, 1935, the son of Stanley J. and Beatrice (Angell) Richter.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judith E. (Evasius) Richter; his son, Thomas and wife, Louise, of Belfast; his daughter, Rosemarie Richter, of Rockland; and his son Eric and wife, Heather, of Las Vegas. Four grandchildren, Stephanie Deredin, Brian Richter, Nicholas Mahar, and Alexander Mahar, as well as great-grandchildren, Ellie and Ryan Deredin, also survive him.
He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his siblings, Stanley, Jr., a brother that died in infancy, and a sister, Cynthia.
He served in Germany in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He worked many jobs, but among his favorites were the Springfield Armory and Taylor Rental as a cabinet maker while living in Massachusetts. In 1981, he and his wife relocated to Lubec, Maine, where they owned and operated the Western Auto and enjoyed 23 years in the town. He also liked working for Ramsdell Construction and Oceanview Nursing Home.
Richard enjoyed his woodworking projects of which many grace his family's homes as well as those of friends. He took pleasure in gardening, and each year he shared the bounty with the local food pantry. He worked on building window inserts for Window Dressers, Inc. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3942 through St. Francis of Assisi parish in Belfast.
A burial mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi in Belfast on May 14 at 11 a.m. Interment will be June 3rd, 1 p.m., at the Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Donations in his name may be made to the Belfast Soup Kitchen.
