Richard Earl 'Dickie' Mahan

January 19, 1933 - February 05, 2019

Bangor - With a heavy heart we share our Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather, Richard E . "Dickie" Mahan's passing, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, on February 5, 2019, with family at his side. A four year resident, he certainly enjoyed entertaining friends and staff. Born in Mars Hill, January 19, 1933, the son of Ruth Broad Mahan, and Frank Charles Mahan, Sr.
Dickie was a 1951 graduate of Aroostook Central Institute, Mars Hill, active in FFA, receiving many National Farm Mechanics Awards; former member of the Mars Hill Town Council, Mars Hill ATV, American Legion, FFA honorary member, member of Parish of the Precious Blood, Catholic Church, Mars Hill; served in the army, Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas.
He enjoyed all aspects of farming, growing potatoes over fifty years, peddled potatoes to coastal stores for many years, loved mechanics, building small tools and equipment for ease of work. During his younger years, enjoyed the log cabin he built on East Branch, Presque Isle Stream, rebuilt with pride in 1985, where many snowmobilers gathered for Saturday night bean suppers. He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping and especially kayaking with his children and grandchildren.
Survived by his wife, Dorcas; children: Paul Mahan (Carla), Hermon, Jamie Brewer (Russell), Blaine, and Shawn Mahan, Mars Hill; grandchildren: Jessica Lawrence (Shawn Devine), Hermon, Blair Scripture (Ryan), Carmel, Kyle Mahan (Maegan), Carmel, Danielle Soucy (Anthony), Glenburn, Abram Brewer, Hannah Brewer, Blaine, Sarah Brewer, Harrison; two special step-grandchildren: Matthew Barker (Brianna), Alaska, Adam Barker (Jessica), Ashland; thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers: Wallace Mahan, Sr., and Frank Mahan, Jr. (Dawn); brothers-in-law, "Boger" Brewer, Ernest York, Mars Hill; sister-in-law, Betty Mahan, Blaine. Predeceased by two brothers, Robert Mahan, Blaine, Paul Mahan; sister, Charlotte York, sisters-in-law, Joann Mahan, Shirley Brewer, all of Mars Hill, Daphine Hoyt, Blaine, Pauline Drummond, Presque Isle, and his parents. He is survived by numerous special nieces and nephews.
Below is a poem special to Dickie with great meaning to him, author unknown:
When I come to the end of my journey, and I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned, and remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken, remember some good I have done,
Forget that I ever had heartache and remember I've had loads of fun.
Forget that I stumbled and blundered and sometimes fell by the way,
Remember I have fought some hard battles and won, ere the close of the day.
Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day,
But in summer just gather some flowers and remember the place I lay.
And come in the shade of the evening when the sun paints the sky in the west,
Stand a few moments beside me and remember only my best. Spring burial at Tapley Cemetery, Blaine, date to be announced. Special thanks goes to the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, Maine for their exceptional care and kindness. Especially from his granddaughter, Jessica, who works there and watched over and enjoyed his antics.
