LUBEC - Richard D. Eaton, 83, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016, surrounded by his loving family in Lubec. He was born August 13, 1932, in Portland, Maine. He was the son of James M. and Georgie A. Eaton. His biological parents were James and Sybil Knowles.

During his high school years, he played baseball and basketball. He recorded a .400 batting average in baseball during his senior year. Dick worked at the Puss and Boots cat food plant in his early years and made many friends there. During noon breaks the men would arm wrestle and Dick would always be the winner. The others named him Champ, a nickname that would follow him throughout his life. Dick worked hard at cutting wood, clamming and especially working his three acre blueberry land for over forty years. He got a job at the local post office as a mail carrier and had a career that spanned over 30 years. It is estimated that he walked 180,000 miles in total on his postal route. He loved working at the post office and will be remembered by townspeople as a kind and friendly man.

Dick was an intelligent man and an avid reader. He spent many of his lunch breaks at the bank reading the Wall Street Journal and would complete the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press crossword puzzles every single day. He enjoyed deer hunting and was a very good shot with any firearm. He was an honest and quiet man who never spoke a bad word against anyone. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be sorely missed.
