Trenton - Richard T. 'Dick' Austin, 80, died peacefully October 7, 2017 at a local hospital from complications of an aortic aneurysm. Richard was born January 31, 1937, in Hallowell, Maine, and was adopted as a toddler by Edwin D. and Minola M. Austin. He attended and graduated from the Ellsworth school system in 1955. Having been raised on a farm, gardening was a lifelong passion. He worked in the family business, H. C. Austin, for several years, and later became caretaker for the late Mary Clark Rockefeller and her family. Dick loved hunting and fishing at their family camp on Spectacle Pond. Spending time with his family brought him great joy, as he closely followed their many interests that included car racing, auto repair, cooking, fishing, boating, art, dentistry, and writing. He could hardly wait to decorate for each upcoming holiday, especially Christmas.
Richard is survived by his wife, Margaret (Morrison) Austin, of 40 years. He is survived by his son, Jonathan A. Austin of Otis and his mother Gloria D. Austin; grandchildren Ayla and her family, Megan Sue Austin and her family; his stepson Joseph K. DeBeck and his wife Leah of Ellsworth; his stepgrandchildren, Jason J. Patten, Joshua J. Patten, Jaret J.E. Patten, Joseph R. DeBeck, Leanne Casin, Sara Patten Rideout, and Dr. Tracey S. Patten Glinko; his sister, Sally Archer, and her husband Donald of Cottonwood Heights, Utah; his sister, Jane Preble, and her husband Orton of Hancock; his biological sister, Janet Jacques, and husband Gerard and their children and families. He also leaves behind his canine companion, Colt. Richard was predeceased by his son, Mark Anthony Austin, in August 2011, his stepdaughter, Jennifer Debeck Patten, in August 2012, and his stepgranddaughter, Catherine Skye Debeck, in September 2016.
Richard requested that there be no formal funeral services and that everyone spend quality time with their family to honor him. Arrangements by Acadia Burial and Cremation Direct, PO Box 99, Mt. Desert, Maine 04660.
