Middleton - Richard W. Ashley

Middleton, MA-Mr. Richard W. Ashley, 86, of Middleton, beloved husband of the late Irene (Yonge) Ashley, died Sunday, December 11, 2016 at the Lahey Medical Center, Burlington following a brief illness.

Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late John W. and Grace E. (Ballard) Ashley. Raised and educated in Lynn he was a graduate of Lynn English High School where he excelled in sports and was the Captain of the football team.

An honorably discharged veteran of the Korean War, Richard proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.

Mr. Ashley had been employed for most of his life as a tunnel worker in the construction industry, working on many projects in and around Boston including the Big Dig. He was a member of the Tunnel Workers Union Local #88.

A longtime resident of the Town of Middleton, Richard enjoyed a lifelong love of football and being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending his summers in Maine and winters in Florida. He loved to drive with his devoted canine companion Scrappy and together they enjoyed many adventures together.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Richard will be deeply missed.

Richard is survived by his sons, Alan Ashley and his wife Gail of Carmel, Maine Wayne Ashley and his wife Karen of Kenduskeag, Maine, four grandchildren, Travis Ashley, Jared Ashley and his wife Sarah, Jason Ashley and his wife Andrea and Nichole Ashley, three great grandchildren, Piper Ashley, Peter Ashley and Xander Crosby, his sister-in-law, Dorothy Ellison of New Hampshire and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements: His funeral service will be held in the Peterson ODonnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte 62) Danvers, Saturday December 17, 2016 at 11 A.M.
Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours prior to the service from 9 to 11 A.M.
Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Richards memory to the Augustus P. Gardner, American Legion Post #227, 69 River St., Middleton, MA 01949
