Paul's Story

BANGOR - Paul M. Winkler Sr., 84, died unexpectedly December 18, 2014 after a brief illness. He was born July 18, 1930, son of Dr. Christopher C. and Harriet V. (Downs) Winkler.

Paul graduated from Bentley School of Accounting, Boston and then entered the US Navy, and served during the Korean War. In 1953 he married Ann Sullivan at St. Mary's Church, Charlestown, MA. He worked for several accounting firms in Milwaukee and Boston, and returned to Bangor to work in the accounting office at Dow Air Force Base until its closing. In 1964 he purchased Tri -City Pizza, and it continues ownership by the Winkler family today. Paul was actively involved in the community and sports programs, coaching basketball and sponsoring baseball teams. He was a member of the Bangor Jaycees, the Saturday Nighters, the Orono American Legion Post #84 and a life member of the Bangor Lodge of Elks.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Winkler; six children, Paul Winkler, Jr. and his wife Jan, Stephen Winkler, Julie McDonald and her husband Bernard, Robert Winkler, David Winkler and his wife Susan, Anne Marie "Anna" Winkler; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Barrera and her husband Oscar, Sarah Small and her husband Aaron, Bernard McDonald, Jr., Gregory McDonald, Daniel McDonald, Juliana McDonald, Roberto Winkler, Heather Winkler, Jessica Winkler, two great grandchildren, Ozara Barrera, Christopher Small; two brothers, Dr. Bruce Winkler and his wife Rachel, Dr. David Winkler and his wife Sharon; a sister, Penny Villenueva; many nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Busack and Jen Wilson.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 4-7 p.m. Monday December 22, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday December 23, 2014 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Essex St. Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St. Bangor, following the service.
