Paul Hanson

May 31, 1932 - September 07, 2018

Argyle Paul Hanson, a long-time resident of Argyle, Maine passed away peacefully on September 7, 2018 from an age-related illness. Born in Houlton, Maine in 1932, he was the sixth child of Margaret Parkinson Hanson and Clayton Hanson of Houlton. He is survived by four siblings, Jean Ayotte, John Hanson, and Mary Foster all of Western, Massachusetts; and William Hanson of Delaware. He is predeceased by his elder brothers Ralph, Robert and David Hanson as well as his devoted second wife of thirty-years, Constance Hanson, also formerly of Argyle, Maine who passed in 2013.

Paul attended local Houlton schools as a boy and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1956. He was a record-setting cross country runner for the University attending on a full athletic scholarship.

In 1956, he married Marie Jane Lowry of Monticello, Maine and fathered five children from that union: Paula Simons married to David Simons of Hadley, Mass.; Margaret Gauthier married to Dennis Gauthier of Staunton, Virginia; Charles Hanson of Amherst, Mass.; Lori Hanson of Veazie, Maine; and Mary Mailler of Lubbock, Texas. He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather as well as an uncle to many nieces and nephews. In his early married years, he served in the military and was stationed in both Loring Air Force Base in Aroostook County, Maine and also in B├╝dingen, Germany, retiring as a captain in 1963. He had a long civilian career as a real-estate appraiser thereafter with the US Postal service retiring and returning to live in Maine in 1995.

Paul, an avid outdoorsman, expert fly-fisherman and skilled hunter was a vocal advocate for the rights of Mainers to fully control and enjoy the beauty and natural resources of the state of Maine. He enjoyed chess, restoring classic vehicles and was an amateur astronomer. Well versed in classical music, great literature and works of art, he passed along an appreciation for the arts to his children.

The family plans a private gathering to honor Pauls life journey and to inter his remains next spring at a cemetery in Argyle, Maine.
