SOUTH PORTLAND - Paul Francis Black, 62, passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home early in the morning on November 19, 2014. Paul was born to parents John Black and Marcadais Drinkwater Black on December 31, 1951 in Bangor, Maine.
He grew up there and made many childhood friends who he remained close with throughout his life. He attended Bangor High School and played in various bands with his friends. He was a gifted artist from a young age and chose to attend the University of Maine Orono after graduating high school.
Despite pressure to pursue other careers, Paul had a deep love for art and was determined to make a living through his painting. He began to show his work in small galleries and art shows and eventually became very successful. When he moved to Portland in 1987, he began painting the Old Port in the winter, scenes he became very well-known for. He began showing at the Fore Street Gallery in Portland and the Redfield Gallery in Southwest Harbor. In 1996, Paul met Irena Holtz, his future wife and love of his life. He had purchased a home in South Portland and was in the process of renovating it. Irena and Paul worked on the house together and later made it their permanent home.
A year after their beautiful 1996 wedding, Irena and Paul gave birth to their only child, Holly. Paul adored Holly and they grew to share a passion for music. Paul's greatest joy was watching Holly play the violin. Paul's only concern was caring for his wife and daughter whom he loved so much. He showed his art work in his studio behind his home and was incredibly proud of the house he had renovated. He was always eager to host art openings and parties where his many friends could gather, eat food, and listen to music.
Paul is remembered as a kind, gentle, and incredibly talented artist, father, and friend. He very much enjoyed his yearly summer trips to Monhegan Island with his family. He painted there for 11 years and connected with many other artists and friends. Monhegan's beauty was always calming and appealing to him. He loved spending time with his wife and daughter, who were his best friends, and went on many trips to places such as Bar Harbor, Boston, and Kennebunkport with them. Paul was incredibly generous, and was constantly donating to various charities. He loved to golf, and never missed any of Holly's basketball or volleyball games.
Paul is survived by his beautiful wife, Irena, his daughter, Holly, his brothers, Hugh and Peter, and his sister, Mitzi Paul. His many Bangor friends always remained an important facet of his life, as well as the many friends he made in Portland and South Portland. Paul's quiet, yet kind and intriguing personality touched many, many people's lives. He will always be deeply loved.
