- Patricia Ann McCurdy Kelley Townsend, 74, died peacefully at home on November 10th 2016.
Patty was the first-born child of the late Helen (Myers) McCurdy and the late James W. McCurdy. She was born on July 16, 1942, in Lubec, Maine. She graduated from Portland High School in 1960.
On June 16, 1960, she married Dana Kelley in Glasgow, MT. Together, they had three children, Dana II, James, and Kellyjean. Her husband, Dana, was killed in action on January 9, 1967, while serving in Vietnam. She married Thurber Jere Townsend on February 17, 1968, and had a daughter, Tiffany.
Patty was a genealogist and historian for more than 50 years, researching her own family lines back generations. She also traced her extended families' lines, and worked with many other genealogists who sought her assistance with their own research. She frequented innumerable cemeteries in New England, New Brunswick, and in Ireland, and spent hours researching records and maps in many Registries of Deeds. She found great beauty in old homes, researching their origins and past owners. She published The Vital Statistics of Lubec, Maine Prior to 1892, and wrote Some Lubec Families. She transcribed multiple old manuscripts and diaries, and assisted with research for Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn. For many years she was active in Portland Landmarks, and The Historical Societies of Portland, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, and Lubec Maine, and voraciously read and collected town history books of any locale that piqued her interest.
Pat was predeceased by her parents, her first husband, and a sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Joe Davis. She is survived by her husband, Thurber, of Yarmouth and her children, Dana Kelley and his wife, Rene, of Leicester, MA, James Kelley and his wife, Pamela, of Port Arthur, TX, Kellyjean Kelley of Freeport, and Tiffany Townsend and her wife, Katherine Rolfe, of Yarmouth. She is also survived by her sisters, Carolyn Enck and her husband, Jeff, of Cumberland, Jean McCurdy and her partner, Patrick Viola, of Saco, and Margo Stephenson, of Kennebunk, and a brother, Steve McCurdy, of Waterville. She leaves many grandchildren, great-children, and nieces and nephews as well.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Ave in Portland. Per Patty's wishes, burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Preble Street, 38 Preble St, Portland ME 04101.
