- Patricia Ann Smith (Pat) passed away peacefully August 31, 2017, in Bangor, Maine, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born March 27, 1936, in Fairhaven, Mass., the daughter of Manuel and Dorothy (Doyle) Machado.
Patricia attended Sacred Hearts Academy, Fairhaven, MA, graduating in 1954. Pat married Jordan Smith in 1958, and several years later moved to Maine to raise their family. They opened and ran the Black Knight Restaurant in Brewer for 20 years. Pat was always helping out with her children's adventures. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. As her family got older, she became a member of Beta Sigma Phi, and made many longtime friendships. Pat enjoyed cooking, bird-watching, traveling, sewing and knitting, and spending time with family and friends. Pat loved decorating her home for Christmas and making "goodies" to share during the holidays. They loved dogs, having raised several, including Springer Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels, which became her favorite breed.
Later in life, Pat and Jordan moved to Cape Cod, where she would care for her aging family, then retired to the "Sunshine State" of Florida. While in Florida, Pat battled with Alzheimer's disease, and eventually moved back to Maine for support from their family.
Soon after moving back to Maine, it became necessary to move her into a nursing home to ensure her safety and well-being. She was a resident of Westgate Center for over six years, and just recently transferred to Eastside Center. She received wonderful love and care, being treated with dignity and respect, under the close watch of a loving family friend. Tammy ensured that Pat received the best care possible during the progression of her Alzheimer's. The family wishes to thank everyone that cared for her.
Patricia is survived by Jordan, her husband of 59 years; her children, Nancy and her husband, Peter Gott, of Bangor, Shawn Smith from Holden and Mark Smith of Bar Harbor. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Nicole Sickles of New Hampshire, Brooke and husband, Chris Depot, of Rhode Island, Brandon Smith and Colby Smith, both of Holden; and one great-granddaughter, Rosalie Depot of Rhode Island. Her dog, Dixie, gave her great comfort during the beginning of her illness. Pat also leaves behind many others that will miss her dearly. Pat was predeceased by her parents, aunt and grandson, Shane Sickles
Funeral service will be held at St Josephs Church, 531 N. Main St., Brewer, Maine, Saturday, September 9, 10 a.m. followed by a committal at the Clewleyville Cemetery, outer Eastern Avenue, Holden, Maine. Following the committal the family would like to welcome friends to laugh and share memories and food with them at a gathering at Tammy and Barry Leland's, 383 Dow Rd., Orrington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Activity Fund for Alzheimer's residents of Westgate Manor and Eastside Center, 516 Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
