Littleton - Norman D. Grass, 88, passed away, Sunday February 19, 2017, with his family at his beside him at his niece Laurice's residence. Norman was born March 27, 1928, in Littleton, the son of John and Lona (DeLong) Grass. He was the oldest of six children with his younger siblings, Luther, John, Joanne, Pearl, and Robert following.
Norman graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, attended Ricker College and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine, Orono. There he met Francis Ayers and they would be married in 1950. Norman and Francis would spend fifty-one wonderful years together, traveling in their motor home and visiting all fifty states and six continents. He served his country in the Korean War while in the U.S. Army, and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. Norman worked as a potato farmer and inspector but his life's work was as a Maine State trooper and later as an investigator supervisor for Maine DOT.He was a member of Local 4 of the Union Operating Engineers, Masons, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Kora Temple Shrine, where he was the first president of the Kora Karts. His hobbies were gardening and flying, which was his passion. He was a charter member and first president of the Pleasant Pond Flying Club in Richmond.
In addition to his parents, Norman was predeceased by his loving wife, Francis; a brother, Luther Grass; and a sister, Pearl London. He leaves behind his siblings, John Grass, Joanne Dingman and Robert Grass; his partner of sixteen years, Paula Smith; several nieces and nephews, including two nieces, Lona Sewell and Laurice Grass Bell, who took care of him for his last few weeks. Norman's family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers and friends for their support and compassion during this time, Anne and Randy Tidd, Dale Esty and Hospice Of Aroostook.
