Deer Isle - Nelson Henry Monteith, 70, of Deer Isle, passed away on September 14, 2016, at his home with family around him.
Born on July 22, 1945, in Caribou, he was the son of the late William Henry and Elizabeth (Currier) Monteith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey and his wife Doreen Monteith.
For all that knew him, Nelson was larger than life. He was unselfishly dedicated to bringing music education to the lives of children around the world. He was a graduate of the Gorham State Teacher's College and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. Over the course of his career he taught overseas in Iran, Belgium, Amsterdam, and China. Surrounding his time overseas he also taught in Waterville, Camden, Brooklin, and Deer Isle, which he made his home. He dedicated seventeen years of his career to the Antwerp International School (AIS). He spent the later part of his career bringing music to the children of Deer Isle through the REACH Performing Arts Center, where he served as director. In 2016 he was the proud recipient of the Kennedy Center Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award.
He leaves behind his sisters; Loyce Warner (Don) of Houston, TX, Waydette Poitras (Robert) of Savannah, GA, and Roberta Pagano (Raymond) of Bristol, RI in addition to many nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
