- Nathan A. Walls, 96, passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2018 at Island Nursing Home on Deer Isle. He was born July 19, 1921 in West Tremont, Maine the son of Alvin A. and Bessie (Reed) Walls. Nathan attended Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor, graduating in 1942. He joined the Navy after high school and completed his basic training at Great Lakes Training Center. He was medically discharged in 1943.
After serving his country, he attended diesel mechanic school and drove a San Francisco city bus. He returned to Maine in 1946 where he worked for the Machias A&P Food Stores as a mechanic. While there, he met and married Myrtle E. Foss, and the two enjoyed 70 years of marriage until her death in August of 2017. They made their home in Ellsworth, Maine where she was a kindergarten teacher. Nate retired from Bridge Construction Company after thirty-three years of service.
In retirement Nathan and Myrtle traveled extensively in their motor home and wintered in Zephyrhills, Florida.
Nathan is survived by his brother, Gerald "Jerry" and wife Jo Ann; his sister-in-law Marion Foss plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Myrtle, his parents; two sisters, Mildred Rich-Dodge and Nellie Rich. A private graveside service is planned in the spring.
