Myrtle's Story

Myrtle E. Blake of Portland died Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. She was born in Canton, Maine on January 11, 1924 the daughter of Lyman and Helen Ellis.

She attended Canton schools graduating from Canton High School in the Class of 1941. She later went on to the University of Maine at Farmington where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1948.

Myrtle taught Home Economics at Madison High School where she also coached the Girls Basketball Team. She later taught Home Economics at Lincoln Academy in Damariscotta and at Old Town High School.

She and her husband, John "Jack" Blake, were married in 1948 until his passing after 63 years of a very special marriage. After a brief stint living in Laconia, NH, they resided in South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Orono, New Smyrna Beach, FL, and finally returned to Maine to live in Portland at Birchwoods Assisted Living in 2004.

Myrtle was always active in the church in each of the communities in which she lived including Meeting House Hill in South Portland, Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono, and Coronado Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach. She also served as President of the Brentwood Garden Club in Cape Elizabeth, was a member of the Ladies Golf Club at Purpoodock Club, President of the Newcomer's Club of the University of Maine in Orono, a member of the Thursday Club at UMO, the Women's Auxiliary of Eastern Maine Medical Center, Trustee at the Church of Universal Fellowship Church, member of the Penobscot Valley Country Club, Trustee on the Board at PVCC, member of Hidden Lakes Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and member of Maine State Ladies Golf.

She is survived by her sister, Anna Allen; her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Thomas Prouty; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Orlando and her husband Keith Orlando; a grandson, John Blake Prouty; and three great grandchildren, Samuel Orlando, Luciana Orlando, and Jaiden Prouty; niece, Judy Kirk and family; nephew Terry Allen and family, and; nephew, Thomas Allenach and family.

The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the friends and staff at Birchwoods Assisted Living who provided more than assistance to living. Thanks is insufficient to express the deep gratitude that the family feels for the love and care that was provided. You were all loved by Myrtle and Jack.

The family would also like to extend its appreciation to VNA Home Health Hospice and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the compassion and care that was provided these past several days.

The family would like to invite you to join them at visiting hours on Monday, July 25th from 11:00 to 11:30pm with a service following at 11:30 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St, Portland.
