Myron's Story

Text size

Ashland - Myron Lee Howes, 60, passed away on December 17, 2017, at EMMC. He was born on May 30, 1957, at the foot of Haystack Mountain, Castle Hill, Maine.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Myron found great pleasure in hunting, fishing, and shooting. His prowess at repairing and collecting firearms is legendary.
He grew up on the Howes Family Homestead on the Masardis road. Later in life, Myron built his own log home with the help of family and friends with wood from the family woodlot.
He graduated from Ashland High School in 1976. After graduation, Myron was employed as a hand-crew, cutting wood with Mike Rhinebolt for McKee Logging in the Fish Lake area T13R8.
The next year, Myron was hired by Great Northern Paper Co. to train in their new mechanical harvesting program. He limbed trees with a logma, one of the first mechanical limbers. He later was a top operator cutting wood with a Koehring tree harvester, one of the first tree harvesting machines used in the North Maine Woods.
In the early 1980's, as interest and proliferation of mechanical tree harvesting increased, Myron was sent by the company to demonstrate the Koehring in Georgia at a university's technical forestry program. At the same time, he was featured in an article in Canadian Forestry Magazine, with his picture on the front cover.
His last work experience was with the boiler crew at Pinkham Lumber.
Myron is survived by his mother, Carlene 'Jo' (Fleming) Howes, his wife of 27 years, Lillian (LaBelle) Howes, two brothers, Scott Howes, fiancé Debbie, Bernie Howes, wife Laura; one sister, Sharon Cobb, husband Roger; one daughter, Carlene (Howes) Cormier, husband Tom; three sons, Charles Tucker, significant other Leasha, Isaac Howes, wife Alicia, Eric Howes, significant other, Jessi; eight grandchildren, Jayden 'Tonto', Hadlee 'Had', Paige 'Bert', Emma 'Ernie', Kaydence 'my Kaydence', Carson 'Killer', Kiersten 'Fred', Annie 'Annie Oakley' along with many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his dad, Bernard Howes Sr., his brother Michael Howes, and a very special nephew Justin Cobb.
He thoroughly enjoyed his weekly visitors, many lifelong friends (too many to list), and the ones he met along the way.
A celebration of Myron's life will be at the Ashland Rec. Center, Ashland, Maine on December 27, 2017, from 12-4 p.m. All are welcome to come share stories, memories, and laughs. Food will be provided. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to P.O. Box 413, Ashland, Maine 04732.
