Brewer - Michael Xirinachs II, 93, went to be with God on February 2, 2018, at a local hospital with family beside him. He was born on April 8, 1924, in NYC. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the US Coast Guard to fight in WWII. Michael spent two years in the North Atlantic with the Greenland Patrol, the first cutter to cross the Arctic Circle. His ship, the Tampa, did convoys to Europe and beyond. He was assigned to the Lurlene in the South Pacific, where he participated in the liberation of the Philipines.
After his discharge, he returned to NYC with the rank of 1st Class MM. He married Edith (Perrdomenico) and began his family. Michael worked for the NYC Board of Transportation. The family moved to the Boston area where he worked as a general contractor until he joined the firm of R.L. Polk and Co. where he worked for over 17 years. On August 2, 1969, he married Susan (Lyford) Xirinachs. They moved to NJ, but returned to Brewer with their son, Keith. Michael worked as area director for the American Cancer Society, then as volunteer services director for the Bangor Mental Health and then for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging. His retirement position was as a corrections officer for the Penobscot County Sheriff's Dept., and then as a jury officer for the Penobscot County Court.
Michael enjoyed swimming, gardening, music and dancing. He was a N.Y. sports fan, but came to appreciate the Red Sox and Patriots. Michael was a lifetime member of the VFW, on the board of the Brewer Parks and Recreation Committee for over 17 years, a member of the Brewer Historical Society, and the Saturday Nighters dinner dance group.
Michael is survived by his wife, Susan (Lyford) Xirinachs of Brewer; his siblings, Mercedes Correa, Amy Tria, Eddie Xirinachs, mother-in-law, Jean Lyford, and brother and sister-in-law, Rep. Peter Lyford and Marcia; his children, Lorraine Fratus, Arleen Brown and husband, Cal, Marlinda Langone and husband, Paul, Rozanne Kilpatrick and husband, Sam, Michael Xirinachs III and wife, Nanci , Karl Xirinachs and wife, Mary, Stephen Xirinachs and wife, Doreen and; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Mercedes Xirinachs I, brothers, Servando, Hector, and Efrain Xirinachs, and his son, Keith.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa's Catholic Church, 425 South Main St., Brewer, and a funeral service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Spring interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
