- Maxine F. Atwood passed away peacefully March 26, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at her home. She was born on January 22, 1932, in Orland, the daughter of Oscar and Emily (Phinney) Smith.
Maxine was a devoted mother and wife who enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and husband. She excelled at cooking, home making, loved music and dancing. Holidays were always special times to share her love with her family especially Christmas.
In her younger years she enjoyed playing bingo with her sisters and friends and going to the beach with family. In her later years she loved visiting Florida with her husband, daughter and son-in-law.
She married Ernest L. Atwood on May 31, 1953. She is survived by her husband, Ernest of Hampden; two sisters, Barbara Calvi of Orrington and Emily Benson of Holden; sons, David Smith of Orrington, Ernest O. Atwood of Huntsville, AL; and daughter, Faye M. Witham; and son-in-law, Roscoe L. Witham of Hampden; grandsons, Jason J. Atwood and Jared M. Atwood of Huntsville, AL and Roscoe C. Witham of Hampden; granddaughter, Rachel (Witham) Smith and her husband, Dustin Smith, also of Hampden; and great-grandson, Aiden M. Smith.
She was predeceased by her parents, Oscar Smith and Emily (Phinney) Smith; brothers and sisters, Mila Moore, Walter Smith, Frank Smith, Charlie Smith, Bobby Smith, Patsy Witham, Ralph Smith, Sheldon Smith, Geraldine Hopkins and Brenda Tinker.
