Mathilda's Story

NEWPORT & PRESQUE ISLE - Mathilda "Tillie" Burke R.N. died March 3, 2015 at the age of 99. She was born in Bangor Sept. 27, 1915 the daughter of Joseph and Cora (Damon) Cloutier. Mathilda was the wife of Paul W. Burke M.D. who predeceased her in 1984.

"Tillie" graduated from Carmel High School and was a graduate of EMMC School of Nursing. She furthered her education doing graduate work at Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She was a former charge nurse in Obstetrics at the Doctors' Hospital, in New York City, and a former Obstetrical Instructor/ Supervisor at the Philadelphia General Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She served as a member to the Maine Advisory Committee on Mental Health under Gov. Reed.

"Tillie" worked many years with the local Girl Scouts and served as president of the following organizations: the Newport Town Health Council, Newport PTA, the Newport Woman's Club, the Friends of the Newport Public Library as well as Chairman of the Newport Library Board of Trustees, and the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She was the first president of the former Maine Penobscot Unit of Parliamentarians; a member of the Maine Federation of Women's Clubs and served as its District 2 President. She was a member St Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield.

For the past several years Mrs. Burke has made her home at Leisure Village Assisted Living Center in Presque Isle and at the Presque Isle Rehab and Nursing Center.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands Mary and John Turner of Newport, Rebecca and Steven Condon of Presque Isle, one son Paul W. Burke Jr. M.D. of Parkersburg, West Virginia, five grandchildren Kimberly Lane, Miranda Condon, Kate Condon, Peter Burke, Patrick Burke, two great grandchildren, Charles Lane and Mathilda "Tillie" Lane. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Mary Burke.

Graveside service will be conducted 11 AM, Sat. May 9, 2015 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Bangor. In lieu of flowers friends who wish may make memorial donation to the: Central Aroostook Humane Society, 26 Cross Street Presque Isle, Maine 04769.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown funeral Home and Cremation Service Center 34 High St. Newport, Maine 04953.
