- Mary Olena Sutherland, 97, widow of Albert Sutherland, passed peacefully at home on March 28, 2017.
Mary Olena Parker Newman Sutherland was born on January 5, 1920, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to Lillian Parker and Sumner Newman, both of Campobello Island, N.B., Canada.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, her parents and several siblings. Mary is survived by her sons, Allan W. Sutherland with his wife, Jana L. Sutherland, and Warren L. Sutherland, all of Eastport, ME; two grandsons, Brent M. Sutherland of Sanford, ME, and Jesse D. Sutherland and his partner, Carolyn Curioli, both of Edmunds, ME; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Isabella; sister, Naomi Lundin of Cherryfield; and several nieces.
While born in Massachusetts, Mary was raised at her grandparent's (William Henry Parker and Naomi James) home at Wilson's Beach, Campobello Island, N.B., Canada, later moving to Lubec and then to Eastport, where she met her husband, Albert.
Mary's hobbies were collecting antiques and historical books. She had a fierce passion for her home here in Eastport, which was built for her and her husband, Albert, by her father-in-law, Allan (Aldie) Sutherland and family friend, Warren Sullivan, on the foundation of the old Fort Sullivan block house.
There will be a memorial service for Mary at her home in June, the date to be announced later.
