Blue Hill - Mary Chase (Saunders) Owen, 91, of Sedgwick, passed away on December 19, 2017 at the Blue Hill Hospital. She was born on February 5, 1926 to Olive Mae (Nevells) and Fred Kirkpatrick Saunders in Blue Hill. She was married to George Parker Owen for 37 years and they had three daughters. Before George passed in 1979, they had turned their home into an apartment house that she managed for the last 40 years. Mary was a strong-willed and hard-working woman. Over the years, she worked for blueberry, sardine, and wreath factories, took in state children, cared for elderly family and friends, delivered Meals for ME, worked in the kitchen at the Millinocket Hospital, Kidney Pond Camps at Baxter Park, Tomhegan Camps at Moosehead Lake and Camp Four Winds on Walkers Pond. She also was a member of the North Sedgwick Baptist Church and a Seventh Degree member of the Sedgwick Grange #244.
She is survived by her daughters: Phyllis Johnston and husband Albert of Carmel and Linda Girsa and husband Edward "Eddie" of Millinocket; grandchildren: Emily Johnston, Albert Johnston and wife Karen, George Johnston and wife Lori, Stephen Girsa and wife Debbie, and Edward Girsa and wife Heather; great-grandchildren: Matthew, Lindsey, Megan, Kathryn, Steven, and Abigail Johnston, Tyson, Jessicca, Bailey, Maisey, and Braidey Girsa; a sister, Virginia (Saunders) Torrey Simmons of Sedgwick and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, her infant daughter, Mary Esther Owen, brothers, Fred Saunders, Granville Saunders, and sister, Katherine (Saunders) Owen Burgess.
The memorial service will be held at the North Sedgwick Baptist Church on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Douglas W. Drown officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in Mary's memory to the North Sedgwick Baptist Church, 155 No. Sedgwick Rd, Sedgwick, Maine 04676.
