KEENE NH, AND MAPLETON ME - Marian M. Carlson 88, of 197 Water Street, Keene, NH, and a former longtime resident of St. Petersburg, FL, died Thursday, March 24, 2016, with her family at her side, at Bentley Commons in Keene.

She was born in Mapleton, ME on April 4, 1927, the daughter of Marguerite L. (Turner) and Orin F. Winslow and attended local schools in Mapleton. She was the great-great-great-granddaughter of one of the original founders of Mapleton and was related to the Waddells, Chandlers and Stewarts. She was extremely proud of her heritage and over the years, had attended several of the Turner family reunions.

In her teenage years, she traveled throughout Canada and the United States with her mother and brother. The family was on a train heading west when she met her future husband, Ralph D. Gaston. They were married 15 years.

After moving to Florida in 1959, she worked at the former Wolfie's Restaurant in St. Petersburg, beginning as hostess and eventually becoming a co-owner. The restaurant closed in the late 1970's and at that time she began her career in food service with the Pinellas County School System. Mrs. Carlson retired in 1992 as cafeteria manager at the Meadowlawn Middle School in St. Petersburg.

She was a member and served as president of the Pinellas County Chapter of the Florida School Food Service Association and had taken many trips around the United States representing the organization. She was also a lifetime member of the Pythian Sisters.

Mrs. Carlson was an accomplished bowler, carrying an average of 220+, and had been invited to participate in the Pro-Am Championships held in September 1994 in Seminole, FL. She had bowled at the Sunshine Lanes in St. Petersburg for more than 30 years.

Her other hobbies included knitting and crocheting and after moving to Bentley Commons, had knitted more than 25 scarves, enough for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine R. (Gaston) Sexton and her husband, John, of Jackson, OH, Carolyn P. (Gaston) Campbell and her husband, Richard, of Keene; a son, Charles E. Gaston and his wife, Maria, of San Antonio, TX; a brother, Bill Turner of St. Petersburg; 10 grandchildren, Douglas Campbell of Derry, NH, Karen Campbell of Keene, John Sexton of Indiana, Kristina Inbody, Kerry Willis, and Dusty Sexton, all of Ohio, Chuck Gaston, Tonya Gaston-Sweeney, Justin Gaston and Jennifer Harrison, all of Texas; many great-grandchildren including Natalie Bastille of Keene; several great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Carlson also raised her niece, Layne Leming of St. Petersburg. She was predeceased by her parents; her second husband of 30 years, Ted Carlson, who died in 1992; and a brother, Matthew Winslow.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Avenue, Keene.
