Margaret's Story

MONMOUTH - Margaret Cheney Harrington, 98, passed away May 2, at Marshwood Center in Lewiston, Maine. She was born June 2, 1917 in Biddeford, Maine, the daughter of Irville and Gladys (Umberhind) Cheney.

She grew up in Monmouth, living at Highmoor Farm where her father was the superintendent. A graduate of Monmouth Academy, Margaret then attended the University of Maine receiving a degree in nursing. Her class was the first class to obtain a Bachelor Degree in nursing from the University of Maine. As a registered nurse she worked in hospitals and doctors' offices. She also did private duty nursing and worked for the Tuberculosis Association. She finished her career as a social worker for homebound patients and those in nursing facilities. Her caring acts and good deeds were many. Margaret's moral code dictated that she was "on call" for those she served and her contributions to their lives were significant and sincere. On June 14, 1944 she married Joseph L. Harrington of Patten Maine. Throughout their married life they lived in North Carolina, Maine, Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, and Michigan. In 1977 they returned to Monmouth to live in the Cheney family home until Joseph passed away in 2009. Margaret led a full life. She enjoyed bowling, tennis, golf, camping, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, bridge and cooking. Apple pies were her specialty.

Margaret is survived by her five children: James Harrington his wife Sally of Portage, Michigan, Warren Harrington and his wife Lucia of Marquette, Michigan, Vicki Banton and her husband Craig of Cumberland Center, Maine, Rita Rivers and husband Ronald of Auburn, Washington and Paula Miller of Palatka, Florida. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: John, Peter, Robert, Christen, Kelly, Stacia, Ryan, Tyler and Dylan, as well as ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, her parents, and her brother James.

The family would like to thank the employees of Marshwood Center for the loving care they gave Margaret these last seven years. Services for Margaret will be held Tuesday, May 10 at Bragdon~Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main Street, Monmouth, Maine.

There will be a visitation with the family at 10:00, followed by a service at 11:30AM Interment will follow at Monmouth Ridge Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Monmouth, Maine. Messages of condolence may be sent to: www.finleyfuneralhome.com
