GORHAM - Louise Danforth Downing passed away on December 30, 2015. She was born December 12, 1928 in Rochester, NH, daughter of the late Lincoln and Helen (Kimball) Danforth.
Louise grew up in Lewiston, graduating from Lewiston High School. She spent her adult years in Machiasport and later retired to Florida with her late husband, W. Edward Downing. She returned to Maine in 2004 and lived in Brunswick, the Betsy Ross House in South Portland and recently at the Gorham House, Gorham, Maine. Louise received her college degree from the University of Maine in Machias in 1968. She was a member of the Warren Chapter of the Eastern Star, she enjoyed square dancing, travelling and, after moving to Florida she joined a local dance studio enjoying several years of ballroom dancing, and also volunteered 15 years at Treadway Elementary School, Leesburg, FL. Upon returning to Maine she volunteered at West Bath Elementary School and later at Partners for World Health, South Portland, Maine.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Bill and Jeanie Downing of Bar Harbor; her four daughters (and husbands), Susan Walker of Orrington; Mary and Billy Hammond of East Machias; Elaine and Terry Graviett of Bowdoinham; and Laurie and Dennis Perseille of Standish; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren; a brother, Stuart and wife, Barbara Danforth of Tolland, Connecticut; one sister-in-law, Lois Downing of Houlton, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.
