- Larry Thies, 75, of Bangor, ME, died December 20, 2017, in Bangor. He was born on January 24, 1942, to Henry and Thresea Thies in Derby, Maine.
Larry grew up in Bangor, where he joined the U.S. Air Force and served at Berlin, Germany, during the Cold War. Larry returned to Bangor, where he served as a fireman.
Larry was well known and fondly remembered as someone who was willing to go out of his way to help anyone in need. Many have appreciated his kind ways in teaching them his many skills.
Larry was awarded a greater Bangor region Hometown Hero USA award for delivering homemade cookies for homecoming troops. He was recognized publicly for making hundreds of scarfs and hats for the American Heart Association, VA clinic, US troops and Coats for Kids.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, woodsman, gardener and jack-of-all-trades.
Larry is survived by his common law wife, Shirley Boynton; stepchildren, Sherry Boynton and Jerry Boynton II and wife, Cathy; his daughter, Angelique Thies Grado and her husband, Sergio; his brother, Cliff Thies and wife, Marita; as well as 5 grandchildren, Michael, Christina, Jerry, Sophia and Racquel; as well as several brothers-in-laws and a sister-in-law.
Arrangements are being made for a memorial at a later time in 2018. Memorials donations may be made in his name to the Bangor Fire Department Fireman's Relief Association or the American Heart Association.
