Katrine's Story

Text size

Stockton Springs - It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing on Sunday, 29th of October, 2017, of dearest Katrine Woodward Anderson, 72, beloved Mother of Mak Saito, beloved wife of Howard Green, beloved Sister of Margaret Anderson, grandmother to Kaiah Callahan, Mia Callahan, Kunio Saito, and Rory Saito, and friend of so many in this community.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mhari Saito, and parents. William Thomson Anderson and Mary Ann (Woodward) Anderson. Katrine was born in Newcastle, England, in 1945, went to University in Wales and Graduate school in Edinburgh, before going on to see the world. She then lived in Tokyo and Indonesia before settling in Washington, D.C., where she raised her two children with her first husband, Kunio Saito.
Katrine brought such joy to so many with her beautiful singing and she touched so many people's lives with her kindness and wonderful help. As an economist at the World Bank, Katrine worked in Turkey, then primarily in African countries including Uganda and Senegal. She was courageous, and dedicated to making a difference which increasingly meant working to empower the women who brought up families and worked on the land, yet had no rights or opportunities. She continued to work with NGOs on women's issues in development after her retirement. She conducted her own micro-finance, investing her money in individual women's enterprises to set them on the path to independence.
After retiring, Katrine spent her time between Annapolis, Maryland, and Stockton Springs, Maine, with Howard, where they enjoyed sailing and volunteering at the Belfast Farmers market. Katrine shared her love of Celtic music by performing and recording several much loved albums. Katrine was a blessing and inspiration to us all, and we will all miss her very much.
A remembrance in the style of a Quaker meeting will be held at her and Howard's home in 95 Osprey Reach, Stockton Springs, on Saturday November 4 that 1:30-3:30 p.m. (howardmgreen@comcast.net). In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to No Stomach for Cancer (www.nostomachforcancer.org). Arrangements are under the direction and care of Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Searsport.
