BANGOR - Karen Hultzen Belleau died peacefully at home on June 7, 2016. She was born October 21, 1936, in Los Angeles, CA, the daughter of Lee S. Hultzen and Katherine (Stout) (Hultzen) Mendel.
Ms. Belleau graduated from high school in Urbana, IL, and received a bachelor's degree in French literature from Swarthmore College and a master's degree in early childhood education from Wheelock College. She was proud to be a public school teacher for 28 years, first at Hanscom Primary School in Lincoln, MA, then in Milford, ME.
Ms. Belleau had a great many loves: her family, her friends, visual and performing arts, traveling, reading, writing, gardening and socializing. She sang for many years with the Oratorio Society and spent her last year happiest when singing impromptu with others.
She is survived by her brother, Carl Hultzen and wife, Judith, of Waltham, MA; her sons Peter Belleau, Michael Belleau and wife, Molly Sneden, Alan Belleau and wife, Lupe; and her daughter Susannah Owen and husband, Jeff. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Max, Milo and Alexander Belleau and Katherine and Thomas Owen.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dean C. Ridlon.
A memorial service to honor both Ms. Belleau and her husband will be held at the inn at Dirigo Pines, 9 Alumni Drive, Orono, ME, on Monday, June 13, at 4:00 pm. All are welcome. Memorial contributions may be sent to UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, or the charity of your choice.
