BLUE HILL - Justine Claire Schneider of Blue Hill died on October 20, 2015, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, following complications from a stroke.

She was born in Muncie, Indiana, on May 19, 1933, the daughter of Ronald and Maxine (Chapman) Sires. Her family moved from Indiana to Walla Walla, Washington, in 1943. She attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, before receiving a B.A. from the University of Washington, in Seattle, in 1955. She worked for several years as a social worker in Seattle, and then as a Kindergarten teacher at the Little School, also in Seattle.

In 1967, she married attorney Edwin R. Schneider, Jr., of Washington, D.C. The couple moved from Washington, D.C., to Blue Hill in 1970 with their two young children. She was Kindergarten teacher to a generation of Blue Hill residents, teaching at Blue Hill Consolidated School from 1977 until her retirement in 1994. She held a master's degree in human development from the University of Maine.

She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, serving at various times as a trustee, as a deacon, and in other capacities, and singing in the choir for four decades. She was also a longtime member of the Bagaduce Chorale, and performed in several productions of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Hancock County and other local theater companies.

Justine shared her life and love of it, with her family, friends, coworkers, pets and farm animals (especially pigs), children and others - in many and varied ways. Her desire and need to be creative, shone through in all aspects of her life, be it through work, home life, travel, knitting, sewing and craft making, gardening, camping, cooking, nature observation, singing, community involvement, through a heightened sense of curiosity, and in her special welcoming (to say the least!) presence, that lives on in those who knew and loved her and who miss her.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2010, and by her brother, David Sires of Seattle, earlier this year. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Chapman Schneider, of Blue Hill, and son, Stephen Corcoran Schneider, of New York; and by two cats, Patrick Star and Squidward, also of Blue Hill.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Blue Hill (22 Tenney Hill, Blue Hill, ME 04614) on Saturday, November 14 at 1:00 in the afternoon. A reception will follow, at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blue Hill Public Library, 5 Parker Point Road, Blue Hill, Maine 04614.
