ELLSWORTH - Judith A. (Stanley) Norsen Hammond died from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at her home. She had been under hospice care for several months. She was born in Bar Harbor on August 13, 1940, to George G. and Zelda (Davis) Stanley.

After graduating from Bar Harbor High School in 1958, she met and married her first husband, Peter J. Norsen II, in 1959. During their married years, she with her children, followed him to his naval stations in Nicosia, Cyprus, Brindisi, Italy, and Washington, D.C. They had three children, but the marriage ended in divorce. She married her second husband, George Hammond and they had a son. The family moved to Southwest Harbor and Washburn, where the children attended several years in the local schools. That marriage also ended in divorce. Moving back to Bar Harbor, Judy worked at Don's Shop 'n Save for more than 13 years. She then operated a craft store for two years. She was also a Justice of the Peace/Notary Public for several years and a police dispatcher in Southwest Harbor; but most of her employment was as a cashier in grocery and retail stores.

In addition to her parents, George and Zelda Stanley, she was predeceased by seven brothers, Eugene, LeRoy, Kenneth and James Strout, Samuel and Charles Stanley, and an infant boy; and a sister, Thelma (Strout) McClellan. Also, her former husband, George Hammond; and a stepdaughter, Sherri (Hammond) McDevitt. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki (Norsen) and David Newman, and Marisa (Norsen) and Brian Colbeth; two sons, Peter Norsen III and Jason Hammond; two sisters, Dorothy (Strout) Bogue and Joan (Stanley) Staples; three brothers, John, Elmer and Robert Stanley; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Stanley and Rosalie (Dolly) Stanley; eleven grandchildren, Joshua, Crystal and Jesse Newman, Logan and Haley Norsen, Katie and Becky Osborne, Isaiah Lord, Emilly, Avery and Lilianne Hammond; and 7 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by stepchildren, Debra (Hammond) Young, Wendy Hammond and Butch Hammond; former husband, Peter Norsen II; and many nieces and nephews. She leaves special friends, Ginny Shields, Bethany Shea, Sueann Sargent and lifelong friend, Rita Walls. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kathleen Rensenbrink and the Hospice caregivers who so lovingly cared for our mother, especially DeeDee and Nurse Beth, and our very special Nancy Cunningham who cheats at crossword puzzles and made our mom laugh.

Judy was a member of Family Bible Church in Ellsworth, where a service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2016, at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Judy would like donations to be sent to the SPCA of Hancock County.
