Joyce's Story

FORT KENT - Joyce Ann (Mertes) Kelly died unexpectedly at her residence in Fort Kent on October 1, 2015. She was born June 18, 1929 in Northwest-Norwood Park, Illinois, the youngest of four children born to Bernard and Muriel (Parnell) Mertes.

Joyce graduated from William Howard Taft High School in Chicago in June, 1947. She completed a three year elementary course at Maine State Normal Schools in Fort Kent on June 29, 1950. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maine at Orono in June 8, 1963. She met the love of her life Paul Kelly, at UMO. They married June 21, 1950, in Illinois and began their sixty-four years together. They raised six children while living in Fort Kent, Hodgdon and Milford. Joyce began her teaching carrier in Veazie, ME where she taught third and fourth grade. The family eventually moved back to Fort Kent where Joyce taught first grade at both Market Street School and Fort Kent Elementary School for more than twenty years. Joyce lived life to its fullest, hiking and tenting with friends and family in Baxter State Park, going to camp at Cross Lake with everyone, golfing with Sis, skiing with Bernice and her other friends and walking her dogs down the Armory Road around the college. Joyce loved sports, she participated in synchronized swimming and won a medal as a high board diver. She also excelled in speed skating and lettered in cheer leading for the football team. She taught herself to ski and spent many enjoyable days at the ski-tow in Fort Kent.

She was predeceased by her son, Kevin, on Dec. 19, 2012, and her husband, Paul, on Jan. 8, 2015. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter who will carry her love with them in their hearts forever. They include her son, Paul and his wife Margo of Lincoln and their children, Paul, Erin and Meghan. Her daughter, Pamela and her husband Daniel Pelletier of Belgrade and their children; Kelly and her husband March Truedson, and Polly. Daniel and his wife Justine and Hana and her husband, Justin Bennett and their daughter Pearl. Her son, Daniel and his wife Mary of Falmouth and their children, Jill, Patrick, and Sam. Her son Charles and his wife, Ruth of Gorham and their children; Brendan and Annie. Her son, Mark and his wife Ari of Fort Kent and their children; Mira and Finnegan. Joyce is also survived by her sister, Muriel "Sis" Cyr of Fort Kent and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends may call 9 to 11a.m. Tuesday Oct. 6, 2015 at the Daigle Funeral Home, 14 East Main St., Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Committal services will follow in the parish cemetery.
