Text size

Holden & Dedham - Josephine "Glenice" Bernot passed away peacefully on August 28, 2016 at the age of 91 years. She was the youngest daughter of Ellery Turner and Ethel F. (Hughs) Gray and widow of John Bernot. She and John resided on her family's farm in Dedham for 53 years.
She graduated from beauty school in 1948. During her lifetime, she had a successful career as a Regional Manager for Sarah Coventry Jewelry and, besides being a wife and mother, she became known far and wide as "Granny" and has a long history of being an active member of her community. Over the years, she was involved in the Dedham Mountaineer Club, Ladies Aid, Civil Defense, Red Cross, Gray Family Reunion, Scouting, and 4-H. In 1952, she established the Sunday School at the Dedham Congregational Church and, shortly thereafter, was part of the original building committee for the Dedham School on Route 1A. In her later years, she found joy in serving as a volunteer for the Eastern Agency on Aging and dedicated many hours to the Meals for ME program at Holden Square Apartments where she resided. As a member of the Clifton Baptist Church, she was known to the congregation as one of their "Golden Girls".
Glenice was predeceased by her parents and her siblings Pricilla, Florence, Judy, Arline, Madolin, Ruth, and Lloyd, as well as her husband and stepdaughter. She is survived by her daughter, Gail, and son, John, their spouses, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of her long life will take place September 24, 2016 on the family farm where she was delivered into this world by a neighbor, who immediately warmed her in the oven of the kitchen woodstove, so long ago.
As Glenice was a cancer survivor, the family asks that gifts in her memory be directed to EMMC Cancer Care c/o EMHS Foundation, PO Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.
