- Joseph Mayhew, 87, passed away October 8, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 8, 1929, in Dexter, a son of Danville and Ida (Leo) Mayhew.
He married the love of his life, the former Viola Johnson, on December 5, 1950. They had five children and were able to celebrate 65 years together. Joe served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.
Dad enjoyed life to the fullest and his family came first. He loved birds, gardening, and reading, but especially working in his woodworking shop. He ran his own garage for many years, specializing in transmissions. He loved and took pride in all that he did. When you entered his garage the first thing you heard was country music and him whistling. Joe always had a smile on his face. He was a loving man with many talents who taught his family a lot and left us with many cherished memories.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by a son, Douglas and wife, Linda of Corinna; daughters, Nancy and husband, Randy Webber of Garland, Connie Scales of Vermont, and Judy and husband, Roger Wyman of Dexter; four grandchildren, Danielle Louder, Mike Mooers, Nikki Monley and Chris Wyman; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Cameron Louder, Colton Webber, Tucker and Parker Mooers, Baylee, Rylee, and Nolan Monley, and Lydia Wyman; a brother, William and wife, Ida Mayhew of Plymouth.
He was predeceased by a son, Randy; granddaughter, Brandi Scales; grandsons, Dougie Mayhew and Ryan Webber; and three brothers, Herbert, John, and Ralph.
There will be no viewing. A graveside funeral and committal service will be held at 11 A. M. Wednesday at Rural Grove Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Bob Emrich officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Dexter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lafayette Family Cancer Center, 33 Whting Hill, Brewer, ME 04412.
