Jonathan Allen Birt

September 05, 1951 - January 04, 2019

East Millinocket - Jonathan Allen Birt, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, entered into eternity surrounded by family at Millinocket Regional Hospital on January 4, 2019; succumbing to a 16-month battle with cancer. Jonathan was born in Millinocket on September 5, 1951 to parents Daniel and the late Pauline Birt.
Jon was a 1969 graduate of Schenck High School in East Millinocket and worked for over 40 years in the paper mill in his home town. When Katahdin Paper Company closed in 2011, Jon enrolled at UMaine-Augusta, earning a certificate in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation and an Associate of Science Degree in Mental Health & Human Services.
Jon was predeceased by his mother, Pauline Birt, sister, Valarie, and a daughter, Christina. He is survived by his wife, Paula, father, Daniel, brother,Clifford, brother-in-law, Slugger Baines, sons Ralph and Douglas, daughters Nicole York and husband Donnie, and Courtney Caiaccia and husband Mike. Jon cherished his four grandchildrenMadison Birt, Camden York, Mackenzie York and Caleb Caiacciawho served as his greatest joy.
Kindness and a heart to serve others are two of the things that come to mind when reflecting on Jon's memory. Jon would do anything for anyone, without reservation. Over the course of twelve years and thirty children, Jon and Paula served as licensed foster parents. Jon went above and beyond to provide stability and encouragement to each child blessed to spend time in his care. He was devoted to his faith in Christ, and to loving and caring for his wife of 47 years, especially after she suffered a life-altering stroke/aneurism.
Jon did not lose to cancer. The disease harmed his body and reduced his physical strength, but it could not supplant his faith nor deter his ability to see the good in every situation. Jon battled cancer relentlessly; with grace and ferocity, humor and action. In spite of his condition, Jon remained upbeat and an encourager. He even spearheaded a wildly successful fundraiser benefitting the Oncology department at MRH.
While his family will miss him greatly, they can take heart knowing Jon is in a better place; a place where his body is free from pain and he has been promoted to playing a grand piano accompanied by a chorus of Angels. Speaking of Angels, the family would like to thank Julie Hamm, Samantha Thompson and Terri York, the caregivers who supported both Jon and Paula in recent months.
At Jon's request, there will be no viewing or funeral. Instead of cards or flowers, the family encourages you to honor Jon's memory by living as he did: love others, make a difference in the life of a child...leave your mark. Do all things with great love.

Our condolences for the Birt Family as you
grieve the the loss of Jon. May you all have
comfort during this stressful time. My earliest memories of Jon is when he delivered the Bangor Daily News to our house, and the conversations he and my father had when he came by to collect payment for the newspaper. I worked with Jon at Great Northern Paper from September 1979 to April 2011. Jon was very
knowledgeable about the paper making process and was my machine tender on our
crew. He had a very good work ethic and was an excellent co worker. His calm demeanor was his tool to get the job done when the paper machines weren’t running
efficiently. His love for his family & church
is why he lived ou
...t his life the way he did
during his last days. His faith in Christ got him to where he knew where he was going.
To quote the Bengali Poet Ravindranath
Tagore- “Death is not extinguishing the light;
it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”
God Bless you Jon. Respectfully,
David & Kathy Page.

Ralph , Nicole and Cortney; I'm so sorry to hear about John. He reached out to me once on a personal level and taught me that forgiveness is something everyone deserves and a second chance at respect from him was something I had earned. He spoke with me about myself and my son, as well him and his children. He gave me great comfort with his kind words of wisdom. He was a great man in my heart aches for you n your mom. Love you all!!!
