- Jon Carl Stearns died at home in Bangor on Monday, July 24, after a long illness. Born January 25, 1957 in Mars Hill, ME, to Joyce (Graves) and Carl Stearns, who predeceased him, he attended school in Mars Hill and Presque Isle, graduating from Presque Isle High School in 1975.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1980 and served aboard the USS America, traveling to the Indian Ocean and through the Suez Canal among other places. Upon returning to Maine, he lived in Portland and Bangor. Jon loved to cook and earned a certificate in Foods Technology from Eastern Maine Technical College. He worked in construction and drove for Uniship. Over the last several years, he lived with and helped care for his parents.
He will be missed by his sister, Jan (Stearns) Umphrey, and brother-in-law Dan; his nephew, Matthew Umphrey; and his niece, Jill (Umphrey) Albers, her husband, Stephen, and his great-niece and -nephew, Edel and Noel. He is also survived by his aunt Ann (Stearns) Shannon and her husband Roger from Baxter, MN; his aunt Norma Graves from Winter Haven, FL; and many cousins and extended family members in Maine, Florida, Illinois, and Minnesota.
Jon's ashes will be placed at Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle, ME, near his parents and a graveside service for family will be held at that time.
