- John H. Welch Jr, 88, of Franklin died peacefully in his home on October 27, 2017. John was born on November 8, 1928 in Sherman the son of Harold and Ethel Welch. After World War II, John served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force, which is now known as the U.S. Air Force. He was a skilled carpenter and owned and operated a construction business for many years. He also worked as Water Commissioner for the town of Franklin. John once served as Commander of the Disabled Veteran's of America Chapter in Medway and was also a member of the Color Guard for the American Legion. He was also a Master of his Mason's Lodge and reached the 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite and Night Templar of the York Rite. He enjoyed reading books, music, and playing guitar, and on occasion would play guitar in a band. John is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Bertha Welch, his sister Janice Lynch of Mattawamkeag, his 8 children Frank Welch of Chester, Cathy Spaulding of Lincoln, Michael Welch of Windsor, VA, Harold Welch of Syracuse, NY, Valerie Hutman of Wolcott, CT, John Welch III of So. Portland, Donna Morin of Sanford, and Steven Welch of Westbrook, his 3 step-daughters Christine Horton of Silver Ridge, Cynthia Deschene of Millinocket, and Gina Deschene of Millinocket, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also predeceased by his parents, his infant daughter Bernice Welch, and his sisters Colleen Mitchell, Virginia Foss and Rosalie Johnson. A graveside memorial service will take place at the Sherman Cemetary on the Golden Ridge Rd. in Sherman Mills on Saturday November 18, 2017 at 12:00 pm.
